On Friday 25th January five Year 10 history students visited Newham Town Hall to take part in the  commemoration of Holocaust Memorial Day.  The event also marked the anniversaries of the genocides in Rwanda and Cambodia.  The theme for this year was “Torn from Home” to show us how the loss of a safe place to call ‘home’ is part of the suffering faced by anyone experiencing persecution and genocide.  We were fortunate enough to meet and hear the story of Holocaust survivor Harry Oliver BEM, who spoke of all the horrors he had to witness and go through.  In addition to this, we heard speeches from the Mayor of Newham, Rokshana Fiaz OBE, as well as other guest speakers.  The event ended with six candles being lit to symbolise the six million Jews who were killed, followed by a minute of silence and reflection.
