Curriculum  Vision

Our vision is to create a Geography curriculum that awakens in  students a lifelong curiosity about their world; develop in them an understanding  of how the world was shaped and how it continues to be shaped by  both human and physical processes, and how these processes shape us in return. Our curriculum aims to  give students access to geographical knowledge that empowers  them to:

• Discover new ways of thinking and how knowledge is created

• Better explain the natural and social world and their interdependence

• Think about alternative futures and what they could do to influence them

• Have some power over their own knowledge

• Be able to engage in current debates of significance

• Go beyond the limits of their personal experience.

KS3

Curriculum Content Overview 

Our KS3 is a 3 year curriculum from  Year 7 to Year 9. In KS3 students will  learn  about  the physical and human processes that shape the world they live in,  through the study of globally significant places across the 7 continents. In Year 7  students will  start their  Geographical journey in Europe  and  round off  in  Asia  in Year 9. Through the curriculum students develop an understanding of the different processes that interact to create distinctive landscapes around the world. The curriculum also aims to build in students' key geographical skills in map reading, analyses and interpretation of data. Field work is also an integral part of the curriculum.

How are they assessed?

Across KS3, there is regular use of formative assessment and an end of unit summative assessment.

Home learning (frequency and expectations)

In year 7, home learning is skills based  while in  Year 8 and 9  topical issues are covered through Geography in the News. Year 7 homework is a termly project booklet, whilst Year 8 and Year 9 have HW every 2 weeks throughout the year.

How parents/carers can support their child:

Check Satchel One  for home learning and support students to complete their homework. Also encourage students to keep up to date with current events.

KS4

Specification- GCSE Geography OCR B.

Curriculum content and aims.

The department follows the OCR B. The aim is to develop in students a deep understanding of the content and skills within the specification.

Over the two years of GCSE they will cover the following topics:

 Year 10

• Global Hazards

• Urban Futures

• Changing Climates

• Dynamic Development

Year 11

• Distinctive Landscape

• UK in the 21st Century
  Sustaining Ecosystems

• Resource Reliance

• Urban and Physical fieldwork

How are they assessed?

• Exam practice questions in lessons.

• Mini tests every 2 - 3 weeks.

• Mock exam’s throughout the 2 years.

Home learning (frequency and expectations)

KS4 home learning is revision based. Home learning is given every week and students are expected to complete all home learning to a high standard and on time. 

How parents and carers can support their child:

Geography students are told to regularly do their revision as the content is extensive. You could support us in this by encouraging your child to use the websites identified below for revision.

There are CGP revision guides and workbooks available in the department for students to purchase and use as revision tools.

Encouraging students to take an interest in the current events of the World also adds to their own knowledge and understanding.
